The Rituals of Durga Pujo - Maha Sasthi
Maa Durga |
Today is the sixth day after Mahalaya. Although Durga puja starts from Mahalaya but for Bengali’s it starts from the sixth day after Mahalaya. According to Bengali culture, Goddess Durga arrives on earth on this day.
There
are many interesting rituals which are performed on this day. The people of
Bengal worship Goddess Durga as a daughter. On Maha Sasthi (sixth day of Devi
Paksha) goddess Durga comes to her father’s house from Kailash (House of Lord
Shiva) with her two sons Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartik and her two daughters
Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati.
The
rituals that are performed on this day are:
Kalparamva
(The Beginning of the Puja)
Bodhan (The Consecration of Maa Durga)
Amantran (Inviting the Goddess)
.
Adhibas (Sanctifying the Stay of The Goddess)
Adhibas (Sanctifying the Stay of The Goddess)
Kalparamva
Kalparava is the beginning of the puja. It
starts with the worship of apple wood tree. Apple wood tree symbolizes Lord Shiva.
By Worshipping this apple wood tree we inform Lord Shiva about the safe arrival
of Goddess durga with her children. By this ritual we also ask Lord Shiva’s
blessings to perform the puja.
Bodhan
Bodhan is the starting of the main puja. In
Bodhan the ladies set up kalash before the idols. Altogether 14 kalash are set
up before the idols, one is for Goddess Durga, one for Goddess lakshmi, one for
Goddess Saraswati, one for Lord Ganesh, one for Lord Kartik and another nine
for the nine planets including Sun and Moon. All the kalash are established
with mantras. It is believed that by the establishment of these Kalash the
idols of Gods and Goddesses come to life. There after we offer weapons to all
gods and goddesses.
Amantran
In the ritual Amantran (invitation) all Gods
and Goddesses are invited to stay with us for the next few days. This is
performed by mantras.
Adhibas
In this ritual the stay of the Gods and
Goddesses are sanctified by a Puja.
This
is all about the rituals of Sasthi. Hope you liked it.
