Location of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, India

Bhitargaon is a town in Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. This place is famous for various ancient Hindu temples. There is a temple in Behta Bujurg village which is only 4.3 km from Bhitargaon. This temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath. This place is protected by the Archeological Survey of India.

Structure of The Temple

This temple has a very unusual shape. This temple looks like Buddhist stupa(mound). It  was built 11th century in the Gupta period. It is said that Gupta emperor Ashoka built this temple. Other than the sculpture of Lord Jagannath, different sculptures are also found in this temple. There is a sculpture of Lord Surya(Sun Deity) and a sculpture of Lord Vishnu resting on Sesh Naga. This temple is more than 100 years old and it is predicting rain for so many years. That's why this temple is known as The Rain Temple.

Every year the accumulation of the water droplets on the ceiling of the temple indicates the intensity of rain of that year. If the size of the water droplets on the ceiling is big, it is believed that there will be a good rainfall and if it is small, then drought may occur. But surprisingly the water droplets on the ceiling of the temple disappears when monsoon comes.
