The Haunting of the National Library Kolkata – Mystery, Legends, and Ghosts

Located in the heart of Alipore, Kolkata, the National Library of India is more than just a treasure trove of books. It’s steeped in history, colonial legacy—and eerie paranormal rumors. Whispers of ghost sightings, mysterious disappearances, and strange happenings have turned this majestic building into a hotbed of haunted folklore.

“It’s not just the books that speak here,” say some regulars—“Sometimes, the walls do too.”

Originally the residence of Governor-General Warren Hastings, this colonial structure dates back to the 18th century. After independence, it became the National Library in 1948. But many believe that the building’s colonial past still lingers, not just in architecture, but in spirit.

Legend has it, the wife of Lord Metcalfe, one of the governors, still roams the hallways. Known for her strict discipline in maintaining cleanliness, many claim to have seen her ghost arranging furniture or getting angry when things are moved.

1. The Mysterious Basement

During renovation in 2010, workers unearthed a secret chamber in the basement, sealed for over a century. Ever since, construction workers have refused to work alone, citing eerie voices and sudden drops in temperature.

“It felt like someone was breathing behind me,” said a site engineer, requesting anonymity.

2. Disappearing Guards

A chilling tale goes that one night guard went missing, never to be found again. Though unconfirmed officially, locals and ex-staff still pass the story around in hushed tones.

Unlike other haunted places, what sets the National Library apart is that it’s still functional, yet frequented by paranormal investigators. The contrast of modern learning with lingering ghosts makes it a true haunted paradox.

While the authorities deny any supernatural activity, they don’t restrict paranormal researchers either. Visitors, especially students, often joke about the “ghost librarian” tapping on shoulders if you speak too loud.

Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, the haunting of the National Library Kolkata continues to intrigue minds and chill spines. Perhaps it’s the age-old architecture, or maybe some souls just couldn’t put their stories to rest.

Would you dare study here alone at night?
