The saying is right you cannot think right or sleep tight with a empty stomach. Indian cuisine has a 8000 years history of food and culture. Historical events, trade relations and colonialism played a key role in the food history of India. Among many other records, India made 3 Guinness World Records for food in last few years. Today my story is about those foods that make us proud as an Indian.

Biriyani is a mixed rice dish. The origin of this dish is Indian subcontinent. This dish is very popular in India. Biriyani is made with rice, meat, vegetables or eggs along with some flavourful Indian spices. According to the history the modern biriyani developed in the Royal kitchens of Mughal Empire during 1526 - 1857.

On March 1, 2008  in New Delhi Kohinoor Foods Ltd. organized an event to cook the largest portion of biriyani. Sixty chefs altogether made this thought come to reality.

To make the world's largest portion of Biriyani they used a massive steel vat and a three feet high furnace. They used cranes to put the ingredients into the vessel as they used 6600 pounds of rice, 187 pounds of chilli peppers, 317 gallons of oil, 8045 pounds of vegetables and 190 pound of salt, they also used 6000 litres of water and 10 kg of spices. Thus they made a Guinness World Record by making the largest portion of Biriyani of 14.060 tonnes.

Chapati or Roti is one of the staple food of Indian subcontinent. It is a bread of Indian origin. But these were introduced to other parts of the world by the immigrants from Indian subcontinent, particularly by Indian merchants.

India made a world record by making the largest Roti. Mr. Bharatsinh Parmar was the head of this project. This largest Roti was made on the occasion of Ganesh Puja by Dagdu Seth Ganpati Sarvajanik Mahotsav (one of the biggest Ganesh puja in India) in Jam Nagar, Gujarat.

Khichri is a dish from the Indian subcontinent. It is made from rice and lentils. This dish also has a reference in history of India. The Greek king Seleucus mentioned about a popular food with pulses during his campaign in India. The Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta also mentioned this dish during his stay in India around 1350. Recently Indian media designated Khichri as the National Dish of India unofficially.

The famous Indian chef Sanjeev Kapoor took the initiative to enter the name of Khichri in Guinness World Record. They decided to make around 900 kg of Khichri in one vessel. 50 chefs came to take part in this project.
